Brennan Beats Atascocita 63–61, Sets Up Alamodome Showdown vs North Crowley
The Brennan Bears are headed to the biggest stage in Texas high school basketball.
Brennan secured a dramatic 63–61 victory over Humble Atascocita in the UIL Class 6A Division I state semifinals, punching its ticket to the state championship game at the Alamodome on Saturday. The win came down to the final second — literally — as a defensive stand sealed one of the most memorable wins in program history.
Now, Brennan will face North Crowley with a state title on the line.
A Defensive Stand That Sent Brennan to the Finals
The semifinal matchup was a back-and-forth battle from start to finish. Both teams traded momentum throughout the night, with neither squad able to create significant separation on the scoreboard.
Atascocita made one final push in the closing seconds, looking to steal the win with a last-second shot. But Brennan senior Isaiah Ward delivered the defining moment of the game, blocking the potential game-winning attempt at the buzzer.
Ward’s clutch defensive play preserved Brennan’s 63–61 victory and instantly sent the Bears’ bench and fans into celebration.
It was a fitting ending for a game that had been tight throughout, showcasing Brennan’s ability to stay composed under pressure and execute when it mattered most.
Brennan Overcomes Early Struggles
The Bears did not start the game the way they had hoped. Atascocita jumped out early and forced Brennan to adjust on both ends of the floor.
However, Brennan steadily battled back thanks to key contributions from several players.
Senior guard Donovan Criss played a critical role in the comeback, knocking down a clutch three-pointer late in the game that helped Brennan maintain its slim lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Brennan’s defensive intensity also increased as the game progressed, limiting Atascocita’s opportunities and forcing difficult shots during key stretches.
By the final minutes, the Bears had regained control — setting the stage for Ward’s dramatic buzzer-beater block.
A Complete Team Effort
While Ward’s final play will dominate the highlights, Brennan’s victory was the result of a collective effort.
Players like Jacob Padilla and Donovan Criss provided offensive support, helping keep the Bears within striking distance during the middle quarters of the game.
Head coach Koty Cowgill praised the team’s poise and growth throughout the season after the win.
The Bears showed resilience by responding to Atascocita’s late-game surge, which included a three-pointer from Carter Savoy and key free throws that briefly swung momentum back to the Eagles.
Instead of panicking, Brennan leaned on its defense and experience to close the game out.
A Historic Season Continues
With the win, Brennan improved its record to 33–3, continuing one of the most successful seasons in program history.
The Bears entered the semifinals riding a lengthy winning streak and have consistently proven they can win in different ways — whether through offensive firepower or defensive grit.
This semifinal win reinforced that identity.
The Bears had previously defeated Atascocita earlier in the season, but they knew the rematch would be much tougher. That expectation proved correct as both teams battled until the final second.
Championship Game Set for Saturday at the Alamodome
Brennan’s reward for the dramatic victory is a trip to the UIL Class 6A Division I State Championship Game.
The Bears will face North Crowley, another powerhouse program that advanced through the other side of the bracket.
