Game 1: Lions Edge Cardinals in Defensive Duel
Final: Southeastern Louisiana 4, UIW 2
Date: April 17, 2025
UIW struck back early after falling behind in the first. An RBI triple by Ayla in the second tied the game, and Altamirano later scored on a steal and throwing error to make it 3–2 after three innings.
Unfortunately, that was as close as they’d get. Southeastern Louisiana padded their lead with a fourth-inning RBI single, and UIW couldn’t break through late despite putting runners on.
Pitching highlight: Senior Larissa Jacquez threw a complete game, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five.
Game 2: UIW’s 4-Run Inning Not Enough in 6–4 Loss
Final: Southeastern Louisiana 6, UIW 4
Date: April 18, 2025 (Game 1 of DH)
Down 3–0 in the third, the Cardinals put together their best offensive inning of the series. The four-run rally featured a two-run homer from Altamirano, followed by an RBI single from Caceres and a defensive miscue that brought home the go-ahead run.
But Southeastern answered immediately with three in the top of the fourth—including another clutch hit from Schneider—and UIW’s offense couldn’t respond despite drawing six walks in the game.
Standout: Altamirano continued her big weekend with a home run and two RBIs.
Game 3: Late-Inning Fireworks Fall Just Short
Final: Southeastern Louisiana 6, UIW 3
Date: April 18, 2025 (Game 2 of DH)
For six innings, UIW’s bats were silenced, and SLU built a 6–0 lead thanks to timely hits and aggressive baserunning. But in the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals came alive.
A double from Altamirano, a walk by Guerra, and a bases-loaded triple by Mata made it 6–3 in a hurry. The tying run even came to the plate, but the rally was cut short with a pop-up to end it.
Silver lining: The three-run rally gave UIW some much-needed momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
Final Thoughts
Yes, it was a sweep—but the series showed that UIW isn’t afraid of a challenge. From Larissa Jacquez’s gutsy complete game to Altamirano’s clutch bat and Mata’s seventh-inning heroics, there were plenty of positives to build on.
The Cardinals showed they can compete with one of the Southland’s top teams—and they’re getting better each week.
